Towns and Cities of Pohorynnia are the territories above the Horyn River, which are repeatedly mentioned in chronicles as a separate territorial entity called Pohoryna, or Pohorynnian towns and cities. Naming or defining individual regions by river basins was common in the Middle Ages, particularly in some areas of Kyivan (Kievan) Rus, mostly in so-called Dnieper Ukraine. For instance, there are also such chronicle names as Porossia (near the Ros River), Posullia (near the Sula River), Podesennia (near the Desna River), Poseimia (near the Seym River).

Pohoryna was first mentioned as part of the volost of Sviatopolk II Iziaslavich, supreme ruler of the Kyivan Rus, who, while apologising to Volodymyr Monomakh and other princes for blinding the Prince Vasylko Rostyslavych of Terebovlia in November 1097, explained: “Davyd Ihorovych told me: Vasylko killed your brother, Yaropolk, he wants to kill you, too, and he plans to take control of your volost, Turov, and Pinsk, and Berestii, and Pohoryna.”

Note: volost was a name for the territory ruled by the kniaz (Prince), a principality; either as an absolute ruler or with varying degree of autonomy from the Velykyi Kniaz (Grand Prince).
