Novozhukivs’ke zamchys’ko (Zamchysko Castle in Novozhukiv Village)

Zamchysko Castle in is known since the end of the 19th century (V. Antonovych confirmed it in his research). There are records stating that there were remains of a stone palace here. Since 1937, aiming to organise pond construction the subcontractors started demolishing of the castle site. However, Z. Leskyi and the Department of Monument Protection intervened and managed to stop the destruction.

The outcomes of the archaeological research (B. Pryschepa, 2020; O Voytiuk, 2016) allow us to date the castle site of the 16th – 17th centuries (the Lithuanian-Polish Era).

Description:

Zamchysko Castle site is located on the left bank of the Stubla River. It is quadrangular in terms of fortification. The sizes of the site are 62 × 80 m, the width of the moat on the side of the field-facing wall (the one facing the enemy) is 25 m. The eastern part of the castle was partially destroyed by a quarry. Nevertheless a 4.5 m wide and 1.5 – 2 m high rampart has been preserved along the south-eastern and partly western edges of the site. A 3 m wide berm was installed in front of the rampart. There are shallow ditches in the southern part of the site that outline the rectangle; probably these are the traces of extracting stones from the palace foundations. There is an entrance from the southern side of the castle. It starts from the southern corner and rises to the middle of the southern curtain.

The castle offers incredible views of the Stubla River and nearby ponds, as well as the “Peresopnytsia” Cultural and Archaeological Centre.
