Kornynsʹkyi zakaznyk (Kornyn Reserve

The total area is 77 hectares. The status was granted in accordance with the Decision of the Rivne Regional Executive Committee dated November 22, 1983 No. 343 amended in line with the Decision of the Regional Executive Committee dated June 18, 1991 No. 98 ). The State Enterprise “Rivne Forestry” manages the object (Zdolbuniv Forestry, sq. 1, 2).

Description:

The authorities granted the status in order to preserve the natural vegetation complex on the hill slopes of the central part of the Rivne plateau. The territory of the reserve covers the forest, where such trees as oak, birch, pine, hornbeam, aspen, linden, cherry, and ash grow. In the understorey one can find Corylus avellana (i.e. the common hazel), Sambucus nigra (i.e. black or European elder), Euonymus verrucosus, Euonymus europaeus (the spindle, European spindle, or common spindle), and Cornus sanguinea (i.e. the common dogwood or bloody dogwood).  Considering the grass cover, or forest floor, one can see that such rare species of plants as European snowdrop, lilium martagon (the martagon lily or Turk’s cap lily), Platanthera chlorantha (commonly known as greater butterfly-orchid), Neottia nidus-avis (also known as the bird’s-nest orchid), and Daphne cneorum (the garland flower or rose daphne) (all listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, an official national red list of the threatened animals, plants and fungi that are protected by the law in Ukraine).

Such birds as the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), Eurasian magpie or common magpie (Pica pica), great tit (Parus major), common starling or European starling, Garrulus (i.e. jays), Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus), Eurasian siskin (Spinus spinus), and nuthatches nest here. A visitor can see such animals as European hare, red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), least weasel (Mustela nivalis), European pine marten (Martes martes, also known as the pine marten or the European marten), the northern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus), the European mole, sometimes there are wild boars and foxes.
